Restless Lens Week 37: New Yorkers Being New Yorkers. Sept 9 - 15.

Week 37 of The Restless Lens is in the books.

As usual, a few of my regular photographic subjects managed to make an appearance. There are cats.

There are dogs.

There are birds. At this point, a week without at least one pigeon would probably be cause for concern.

But looking through this week’s photographs, I realized that the real subject is simply New Yorkers being New Yorkers.

They’re eating. They’re sunning themselves. They’re riding the subway. They’re getting their hair cut. They’re going about their day, mostly oblivious to the guy wandering around with an iPhone taking pictures of them.

There’s nothing particularly momentous happening in most of these photographs. And maybe that’s why I like them. Collectively, they’re a little record of ordinary life in the city. It's the gestures, routines and small moments that are easy to walk past without noticing.

Fortunately, noticing them is kind of my thing. So here’s Week 37.

And a bonus... the elevator in my building went out of service, so I went to the adjacent building, went to the roof, and walked across the roof to our building, and then down the steps to my floor. Only six flights down instead of a 14 storey climb. Well, from the rooftop, I got a pretty amazing view of the 9/11 Tribute in Light: two blue beams aimed into the night sky.
